A manual recliner is the best choice if you want the most affordable option and do not want anything electrical or wired to go wrong. Pick the motorised recliner, If you use your recliner frequently, prefer to pause your lounge at any angle, or plan to have other people use your sofa. Choose a power lift recliner if someone in the home has trouble getting up off a chair. Don’t forget the power outages, humidity, and that extra 60-80 cm of depth in Indian homes to still be able to operate the fully open recliner.
The three types of recliner
A recliner is a chair that leans back, and a footrest extends forward. What separates the types from each other is simply what extends to make it lean back.
Manual recliners: These chairs are reclined by shifting your body or using a hand controller. There are three mechanisms:
Push-back recliner chairs: lean backward on the seat, and the footrest will lift up. No lever, so the sides stay clean.
Lever or pull-ring recliners: These recliner chairs have a handle on a side that allows you to release the footrest while you lean back.
Rocker, swivel, or glider recliner: The base of this recliner chair also rocks, rotates 360°, or glides. Examples: the Karl swivel glider.
Motorized recliners (also known as electric or power recliners): Motorized recliners use a small, low-voltage motor (a linear actuator) to extend or retract the backrest and footrest with the press of a button. Traditional models employ 24-volt actuators that may halt at any 90° (upright) to 150° (legs raised) angle.
Power lift recliner: This recliner is a second choice for an electric recliner. A lift feature that leans the entire seat forward and upward, allowing a person to stand by nearly 'bending up' without having to push down into the arm rests. It also reclines as a standard electric recliner.
Manual vs motorized vs power lift: side by side
Manual recliners win on price and simplicity, motorized recliners on comfort and control, and power lift recliners on independence for older or less mobile users.

7 questions to answer before you buy a recliner sofa
Write the answers for the below questions in order. (Usually the first two settle the type, and the rest settle the model.)
1. For whom the recliner is intended?
Anyone aged 65 or over who has to recover from any hip or knee operation or any form of arthritis can choose power lift. Two or more users who have varied comfort taste or preference can select motorised 2 or 3 seater it has each seat with its own motor, it is best recliner fit for adult of any age.
2. How frequently will it use?
A few times a day powered takes the strain out of reclining and extends the mechanism life. A few times a week manually is sufficient.
3. Is there a power point at hand and how steady is your power?
There’s no socket at the seat and power keeps getting cut without the inverter handbook.
4. How much space do you have?
Measure the available space on the floor with the recliner in the full open position - not folded! Recliners usually get 60-80cm deeper in the fully reclined position.
5. What is your amount per seat?
Price / number of seats, a two seater recliner costs ₹ 90,000 - ₹ 45,000 per seat. Cheaper than many single motorized chairs!
6. What upholstery is best for the climate/your home?
Leather is easy to clean, but prone to marking; fabric is cooler in the heat, velvet feels luxurious but traps dust; leatherette or closely woven fabric are pets' and children's favourites.
7. What style of mechanism?
Choose push-back for a sleek side profile, lever for ease of use, swivel glider for the nursery and reading corners, rocker for a gentle glide.
What Indian homes need to plan
Most recliner guides are for American or European homes. Four conditions that change the decision in India.
1.No power.
When the power goes out a power lift recliner will stop where you are at. If you are fully reclined when you run out of power, you'll need to get out over the foot rest. Three solutions to this:
- Plug the recliner into a circuit that is supported by your inverter at home. You may notice that the recliner uses power only when it moves (hence the load is very low).
- Inquiry if the model has a rechargeable battery pack, so there are just a few moments of recline usable without the mains.
- If there are frequent/daily outages, go manual.
2. Fluctuations in voltage.
Indian mains supply is 230V and the recliner motor is 24V DC, connected via a transformer in-between the socket and the motor. The transformer acts as a buffer in-between the mains and the recliner, but it can be destroyed if there's a large power surge and can also take out the control board. Use a surge protected socket, or spike guard, where you can.
3. Humidity and coastal air.
In the rain-prone seasons of Kerala, Mumbai, Chennai and other humid or windy cities, Steel mechanisms could rust and leather get mold, especially in the monsoon. Opt for powder-coated steel mechanisms, keep your recliner at least 30cms away from any window that receives rain or sea breeze, and condition your leather before and after the monsoon. A manual recliner has less electrical parts exposed to moisture.
4. 2BHK apartment living rooms.
Most 2BHK apartment sitting rooms have inadequate space for the recliner sofa in front of the TV unit. Before purchase, measure fully reclined depth, the space behind the backrest, and, the in the path of walk pasts. 1 wall-hugger recliner or 2 seater recliner sofa on the longest wall works better than a 3-seater recliner sofa.
Health, posture and safety
A reclined angle near 135° provided the least stress on spinal discs in a much-quoted MRI study, and all types of recliner are capable of approaching it.
-The 135° result.
Abdominal scans at Woodend Hospital, Aberdeen, of 22 volunteers in a positional MRI have measured disc movement at three postures: slouching forward, upright at 90° and slouching back at135°. Movement was greatest at 90° but minimal at135°. These results were presented at the Radiological Society of North America in November 2006, recommending a chair which accommodates a135° position. This is a small study and the volunteers had no back pain so treat as a guide, not a prescription.
-Leg elevation.
Elevate your legs above hip height for a few minutes to reduce swelling in the feet and ankles, especially if you've been on your feet all day. Power recline. Our stories motorized models can elevate the footrest to as high as 150° of recline. Consult your doctor if you have a heart, circulation or spine condition to determine the correct angle for you.
-Older users.
For many seniors, one of the most difficult things they do every day is stand up from a low, deep seat. A power lift recliner tilts the seat forward to get you up without much effort through the wrists and knees. The recliner is also motorized so it doesn't require push or pull.
-Children and pets.
The US Consumer Product Safety Commission was aware of 13 incidents, seven deaths, of children between 8 months and 5 years old trapped in the space under the footrest or the gap between the footrest and the seat of reclining furniture between 2011 and 2021. The space under the footrest and the gap are the biggest dangers, and the CPSC said the risk is worse with motorized footrests. In 2023 it asked ASTM International to develop a safety standard. (Home News Now) At home: close the footrest when not in use, unplug or lock motorized recliners during the presence of small children, and discourage children from playing on an exposed footrest.
How much space a recliner needs
A Fully open recliner has deep 90 cm upright, now 150-170 cm reclined + gap behind.

Width is important too. A Stories manual 2-seater recliner sofa is 143cm wide, a 3-seater recliner is 197cm wide. Allow space beside a lever recliner for someone to reach the handle. For small spaces, a wall-hugger recliner moves forward as it reclines, so it has only a few centimetres behind it. Before you buy, measure it out with masking tape to see where it will be.

How Stories builds its half-leather recliners
The seat, back, armrests, and footrest all have a skin of genuine leather top-grain leather to give you a soft, and luxurious feel to touch. The side and back panels are covered with matching PVC upholstery to make them more resistant to wear and tear.
For all materials:
Avoid placing recliners in direct sunlight (this causes fabrics to fade and leather to become dry) and away from AC vents that blow air directly on your furniture.

What drives the price: genuine leather over fabric, motors per seat, extra motions (swivel, rock, glide, lift), frame material and foam density.
Running cost of a motorized recliner is close to zero. The motor draws power only while it moves. As an illustration, a motor drawing 50 W for 20 seconds, 10 times a day, uses about 1 unit (kWh) of electricity a year, which costs under ₹10 at typical Indian domestic tariffs. Check the wattage on your model's label for an exact figure.
The real ownership cost is repairs.
A manual recliner has springs and a cable that rarely fail. A motorized recliner adds an actuator, a transformer and a switch. Ask what the warranty covers for each part, and whether service is available in your city.

Frequently asked questions
Is a manual or motorized recliner better?
Neither is better for everyone. A manual recliner costs less, needs no electricity and has fewer parts to fail. A motorized recliner reclines with a button, stops at any angle and suits daily use, older users and shared sofas.
Does a motorized recliner work during a power cut?
Not on its own. It stays in its current position until power returns. Connect it to an inverter-backed socket or use a compatible battery pack if outages are common.
How much electricity does a motorized recliner use?
Very little, because the motor runs only while the seat moves. Typical home use comes to around 1 kWh a year, which costs a few rupees.
Who should buy a power lift recliner?
Anyone who finds it hard to stand up from a chair: seniors, people with arthritis, and people recovering from knee, hip or back surgery. The seat tilts forward and lifts the user towards standing.
What is the best recline angle for the back?
A 2006 positional-MRI study found that leaning back at about 135° put less strain on spinal discs than sitting upright at 90°. Ask your doctor if you have a back condition.
How much space does a recliner need?
About 150–170 cm of depth when fully reclined, plus 10–15 cm behind the backrest. Wall-hugger designs need only a few centimeters behind them.
Is leather or fabric better for Indian weather?
Fabric breathes and stays cooler in hot summers. Leather is easier to wipe clean and lasts longer with conditioning, but needs care during the monsoon to prevent mildew.
How long does a recliner last?
A well-built recliner lasts 7–10 years or more. Stories mechanisms are tested to over 20,000 cycles, which Stories equates to about ten years of daily use.
Are recliners safe with small children?
They can trap a child under the footrest or between the footrest and seat. Close the footrest after use, lock or unplug motorized models, and do not let children play on an open recliner.
